Using Your Home as a Registered Office? How to Switch to a Business Address

If you incorporated your company using your home as its registered office, you may later decide to move that company record to a suitable business address. The reason may be privacy, separating business post from home life or a change in how you want to manage official correspondence.

This guide focuses on the post-incorporation decision to move away from a home registered office. It explains what to check before switching and how to keep the company’s address roles clear. For detailed changeover steps, see our registered-office changeover guide.

Why Move a Registered Office Away From Home?

A limited company’s registered office is its formal company address. Company address information is shown in Companies House records, so some directors prefer not to use their home as the company’s registered office. Others want official company mail handled separately or need an address in the company’s registration jurisdiction.

Changing the registered office can help separate that company address from your home address going forward. It does not necessarily remove historical information already recorded or change any separate personal address record. Check current Companies House guidance about what information is visible and how historical records are treated; do not assume a change erases previous entries.

First, Identify Which Home Address Record You Mean

Company and director address records are not interchangeable. Before making a change, identify the exact record you want to update:

  • Registered office: the company’s formal address.
  • Director service address: the address used for official correspondence to an individual director.
  • Residential address: a director’s home address, which may be requested separately for private company records or other checks.
  • Trading or customer-contact address: a public-facing business address, if you use one.

Changing the company’s registered office does not automatically change a director’s service address, update private residential information, or change details held by banks, tax authorities, insurers, suppliers or marketplaces. Review those records separately and follow the relevant organisation’s process.

What to Check Before Choosing a Business Address

Do not choose an address only because it is described as “business,” “virtual” or “mailing.” Confirm the particular address and plan are suitable for registered-office use and for the jurisdiction in which the company is registered.

  • Permitted use: get confirmation that the provider allows the address to be used as your company’s registered office.
  • Jurisdiction: check that the address is in the appropriate jurisdiction for your company.
  • Official mail: ask how company correspondence is received and how you are notified.
  • Service scope: verify whether scanning, forwarding or other handling is included or charged separately.
  • Continuity: understand the service term, renewal and what happens if you later cancel.
  • Privacy expectations: check what will appear in current company information and what may remain in historical records.

A registered-office address does not by itself show where the company trades, where stock is held or where staff work. Do not use it to imply physical operations, customer access or other services that are not included.

Plan the Switch Before You File

Arrange the replacement address before ending your home-address arrangement. Confirm the new provider’s terms in writing, including the intended start date and official-mail process. If the company currently receives official correspondence at home, decide how to handle mail during the transition.

Then follow the current Companies House process for changing the registered office. Enter the replacement details accurately and use the official filing route specified for your company. Procedures can change, so verify the current instructions rather than relying on an old form or an assumed turnaround time.

Keep access to the previous address until you have checked the company record and are satisfied that the change has been processed and official mail will reach the right place. Your provider’s activation is separate from the official update to the public company record.

Home Address Changeover Checklist

  1. Confirm that the record you are changing is the company’s registered office.
  2. Select an address and plan that expressly permit registered-office use.
  3. Check the address is suitable for the company’s registration jurisdiction.
  4. Agree how formal mail will be received and passed to you.
  5. Follow the current Companies House change process and retain confirmation.
  6. Check the company’s record after the change has been processed.
  7. Review director service, residential, banking, tax and public-contact records separately.
  8. Check what historical address information remains visible; do not assume it is removed by the change.

Will Changing the Registered Office Remove My Home Address?

A change updates the company’s registered-office details going forward once processed. It does not guarantee that historic entries are removed from public records or third-party sources. Check the latest Companies House guidance for the information available on the company record and any separate process that may apply to your circumstances.

Does the New Address Need to Be Where I Work?

Not necessarily. A registered office is a formal company address and is distinct from a trading location or customer-facing business address. Use each address for its proper purpose and do not suggest that a registered-office service includes staff, stock, dispatch, customer access or general mail unless those services are actually provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change from my home address to a registered-office service after incorporation?

You can follow the current official process to change a company’s registered office, provided the replacement address is suitable for the company and the provider permits that use. Confirm the details before filing.

Will the new registered office change my director service address too?

No. These are separate address records. Review the director’s service address separately if you want to change it.

Should I update my bank and website at the same time?

Review each organisation and public channel separately. A company-record change does not automatically update other systems, and each organisation may ask for different address information.

Is mail forwarding included with a registered-office address?

Not automatically. Check the plan’s exact correspondence and mail-handling features, including any scanning, forwarding or additional fees.

Make the Change Carefully

Moving your registered office away from home is a separate decision from changing a director’s service or residential address. Confirm the new provider’s permission and mail process, follow current official instructions, and check what remains visible in historical records.
